It has now been established that Facebook is new, different and all around cool. But, what is it's impact in the world of internet business. Can it help you make any money? Internet Marketers Should Take Notice Internet marketers are all about people. Social networks, especially popular ones, have lots of people. So, yes, Facebook would be a natural fit for internet marketing. How would a marketer take advantage? Some ways may include: Establishing and enhancing your brand … [Read more...]
Understanding Facebook Basics
OK, after a couple of posts which discuss the impact of Facebook on the web, let's get down to "brass tacks" here and see what Facebook is all about at the ground level. After all, like about 150,000 people do every day, I recently created a Facebook profile. On the surface, it appears like most social network sites. I have friends, comments, and we can send messages back and forth. OK, cool, but not too impressive. So, what else? How did Facebook get to be thought of as a disruptive technology … [Read more...]
Does Facebook Represent a Google Killer?
I saw a really interesting (and controversial) viewpoint by Robert Scoble that I thought was very fitting into my look at Facebook this week. He contends that Facebook, along with Mahalo and Techmeme, represent a force that will spell trouble for Google within the next four years. Here, check out these videos by Scoble: Part I of Social Graph Based Search. 14:41 minutes. Part II of Social Graph Based Search. 15 minutes. And a bonus round III. 6 minutes. His theme was very similar to that of … [Read more...]
Why Facebook Matters
It is really easy to dismiss Facebook as just another social network, likely to go the way of Myspace. Myspace is still very popular, of course, but it's reputation is tarnished among professionals because of all the really CRAPPY content on there. And, it is true, Myspace has really degenerated a lot, in my opinion. But, there is more to Facebook than may meet the eye. There is a reason you find a lot of professional internet evangelists getting onboard with Facebook. This is Web 2.0 At It's … [Read more...]
Twitter a BlowHard Platform?
When I was at Gnomedex, people were sending out "tweets" all the time on Twitter. I found it to be really ironic, actually, considering that my conversations with people usually gravitate to the fact that Twitter is rather useless. But, since bloggers are usually first in line to try the latest crap idea on the internet, I guess a lot of people in the audience thought people cared enough about what they said that they needed to read it in real time. Then, I saw Pirillo's first analysis of … [Read more...]
Web 2.0 Bullshit Generator
Oh, you gotta love this one. I came across the Web 2.0 Bullshit Generator this evening and its a riot. Check out their checklist, too. You can even generate your own Web 2.0 logo! And for a little taste of bullshit, Web 2.0 style, here are some samples: tag dynamic wikis incentivize dynamic wikis tag user-contributed life-hacks reinvent dynamic communities harness rss-capable synergies (hehehe) remix standards-compliant communities I'm going to write my Web 2.0 business plan now... … [Read more...]
MyBlogLog – Community for Your Blog
Last night, I was surfing around, making the usual rounds to keep up with what's going on. I have noticed on other sites (and never thought much of it) this table of mug shots from a service called MyBlogLog. So, finally, I went ahead and checked it out. Very cool! Essentially, it is a community service where you sign up, get a profile, then as you surf around other blogs who are signed up with the service, you show up as a person who recently visited that blog. You're in their blog log, so to … [Read more...]
Plunge into Deep MySpace
As we all know, Myspace.com is one of the most popular names in social media today. However, it has a reputation amongst professionals of being basically a big teen hangout and not worth time for anybody with serious motives. The age breakdown might be a bit of a surprise, though. Interestingly, in this article on MSNBC, Myspace responded to a question about age breakdown by saying they don't discuss the age breakdown (weird response). In this post by ZDNET, we see that there is a drop in the … [Read more...]
Is There a Use for MySpace in Business?
Most of us who are not living under a rock have heard something about the Myspace buzz. It seems to be another internet revolution. The business side of this behemoth is something to behold. It was purchased by Rupert Murdoch (of Fox News fame) for $580 million in July of last year. At the time, people almost wrote it off, saying it was Murdoch's attempt to play catch-up in the new media of the internet. Today, experts say the site is probably worth 10X what Murdoch paid for … [Read more...]
