List Building Tips For Bloggers

Mailing lists are important. So, you throw one on your blog. You place an opt-in form on the blog sidebar and wait for the influx of subscribers. Hardly anything happens. What went wrong?

Chris Guthrie from Netbook Reviews asks the following:

What suggestions do you have for the newsletter I recently started on my blog about netbooks?

Look in the upper right hand corner. I just set it up last weekend (no subscribers yet). I may experiment with lightboxes later to get more people to subscribe but what should I send to them?

My blog has netbook reviews, netbook news and netbook news. Should I just send out emails on netbook deals to make more money and instill a sense of urgency or what do you think? Is it wise to repeat content that I’ve already posted on the blog?

I know I need to come up with another incentive to get people to subscribe – perhaps a netbook buyers guide?

You’ve got a potentially good market there, Chris. When somebody is looking to buy a netbook, they are likely to read reviews first. This puts you in a good position to get traffic in a rapidly growing market.

Aside from building your list, you might look into getting price comparison stuff onto your blog for monetization purposes. Chitika might work really well on your site. Perhaps a cobranded site with Pricegrabber. However, let’s move onto building your list.

Create an Ethical Bribe

As you correctly stated, you need some incentive to get them onto your list. Create some report or video that people will get when they subscribe to your list. If you are scrounging for ideas, head into some tech forums where they talk about netbooks and find out what the common questions are. Then, create a solid piece of content which answers those questions. A buyer’s guide would be a great idea.

Make Your Opt-In Stand Out

Your site has practically zero color in it. You can use that to your advantage to make the opt-in box stand out by providing some color. You want a person’s eye to gravitate to that opt-in.

Once you have created your bribe content, feature that next to your opt-in form. Display an image of the report next to the form. Even though it is a digital report, get a cover designed to make it look like a real book and place that image on your site. If you end up doing a video, then perhaps a thumbnail of your video with a big play button on top.

You might try also putting a small opt-in form right underneath your blog posts.

I also recommend testing use of Action Popup on your blog. It does work.

Grab Your Commenters’ Email Address

When people comment on your blog, they enter their email address. Why not provide the option to add it to your list?

That’s what Action Comments does. Every time somebody posts a comment, they can be added to your list. This is a killer plug-in and I recommend it.

Don’t Forget Landing Pages

We’re all bloggers here so we tend to think of everything focusing around the blog itself. But, realize that one of the absolute biggest problems with opt-in forms on blogs is the amount of distraction. Blogs have a lot of shiny things and great content and this all distracts the end user from your opt-in form.

So, sometimes the best thing to do is send your readers off to a single-purpose landing page. You might even want to use a different domain. However, the idea is that you have some form of teaser copy or a video and an opt-in form – AND THAT’S IT. That means that the reader has only two things to do on that page: (1) Opt onto your list, or (2) leave.

See, you want a yes/no answer. Blogs give too many options. So, try using the blog as a lead generator, sending a reader off to a special link for more information or for an additional resource. That link leads to a landing page with the only goal of getting the person onto your mailing list.

Hope this helps Chris and all the other bloggers out there who want to build their list.

Collecting opt-in information on all touch points of your site will help build your list. Like David said, if you allow comments, allow the users to subscribe while leaving a comment. You can also capture opt-in permission through contact forms or contests. I added the action comments to my site and it works great! I would recommend setting up different groups for each opt-in area on your site so you can track the results from each touch point. I wrote about it on my blog here. http://blog.sd360.com/2009/04/easy-tips-to-increase-your-email-list/

I agree, you have to give a little enticement for a person to get on your mailing list. Example: The other night we went to Kohls department store. After we bought something, they said if we put our name and email address on a form, they would send us a 5.00 off coupon on our next purchase. This of course was just so they could get us on their mailing list. So there, even a large department store chain knows how important a list is, and even more important for a online business, marketer or blogger. You always want them to be opt-in though

I love the Action Comments plugin. My only question is it being too aggressive to have it prechecked? I sometimes feel like I’m taking advantage of those that are less computer/internet savvy.

Also, some ideas or tips of things bloggers can do with a mailing list would also be great. I have a growing mailing list and so far I don’t do much more than send them a newsletter.

I agree with David on all his comments. You have some good information on your site, but you REALLY need to color it up. It is very drab.

You also need to offer your readers something to join your list… maybe a short ebook, “Top 10 Things You MUST Know Before You Purchase a Netbook”, or something like that.

    Much Success to All,

    Doug

    Hello David,

Sorry for the delayed response. I appreciate the time you took to answer the questions I posed. I’d like to respond to all aspects of the post you wrote:

    Create an ethical bribe:

I’m glad you agree with the netbook buyers guide. I’m nearly finished with the guide now – it’s been quite the undertaking and I’ve spent about 15 hours on it at least. I am planning to release it May 1st.

Make your opt in stand in:

I couldn’t agree with you more. I just paid for the Aweber subscription and tossed the code in as a test and as suspected – no subscribers :) . That is perfectly fine as I had a feeling that would happen with the way I tossed it up. Because the theme I’m using does have hardly any color it was hard to decide what type of colors I should use so I settled on none until I finished the guide lol.

Also, I will definetely do the book cover idea – I’ve seen that done a lot by all the big bloggers (including you) so I was going to “borrow” the concept for my netbook buyers guide.

    Grab your commenter’s email address:

Agreed – I will definitely check out that plugin as well as action popup.

    Don’t Forget Landing Pages:

I was planning on creating a netbook buyers guide page on the blog and briefly discussing what’s in the guide and again trying to get people to sign up for the list there. Perhaps that could be my landing page?

I was going to just rid of some of the ads and get some in house ads that link to the buyers guide to help further drive traffic to it as well.

What do you think about repeating content that is on the blog? I was thinking of just doing a single email every week with the posts from the week…

In any case, thanks again for the input. I’m making a variety of changes to the blog specifically focused on improving newsletter conversions. I’ll be sure to drop you a line once I’ve implemented all the suggestions… in fact I’ll probably use this as a mini case study and post the results on my blog :)

    Thanks again!

Yes, that is a great help! I’ve been doing a lot of research into Email Broadcasting Services. I know you use Aweber, and I’ve had a couple clients sign up with it. It seems great, but I just haven’t made the jump onto it yet…

    Thanks again,

I agree with all of the suggestions you wrote about.  I would say the one thing I am going to try is having a separate squeeze page – because as you say having too may shiny things on your site just distracts the reader.  Great suggestion!  Thanks!

List building is largely influenced by your trust and rapport with your target audience. So aim to provide quality, relevant and valuable content to your visitors. When they see you as an authority, they will reward you with loyalty by keeping an open line of communication such as through your email newsletter. Just don’t bombard them with sales pitches and offers in every single email or you run the risk of losing them
