Project Update: The Next Phase

This is my weekly project update, where I tell you what I’ve been up to this week in my business and share what’s on my mind.

This week, I have been busy behind-the-scenes working on the next phase. After all, my goal this year is to expand my personal brand and, in turn, revenue.

This year started off with a bang. January was prep month for the re-launch of Blog Masters Club. In late January and into February, the actual launch took place. A couple weeks after the dust settled, my wife and I had a baby. Ever since then, my work hours have been very standardized, almost like a traditional 9 to 5. My evenings and weekends have been spent with the family.

Business is going well. In terms of revenue, the business broke the six-figure mark before the end of March. Just barely, but I managed to make it a six-figure quarter. Obviously, that’s gross and I do have expenses, so don’t get too excited. :) But, it is a cool milestone.

I’m looking ahead, however. To the next phase. My next products. Ways to expand the brand and the number of people I can help.

I am currently working on 3 new products at the same time. One will be aimed at newbies and people who get stuck with the technical basics at the beginning of their blogging career. Another is a physical version of Blog Masters Club. Lastly, a brand new membership program right here on this blog – called the Inner Circle.

The Inner Circle

innercircle1 Of these, the one that you guys will start seeing soonest will be the Inner Circle. In fact, I spent all day yesterday working on a re-design to this site to accommodate the Inner Circle as well as to fix some issues I wasn’t happy with. The new design won’t be anything drastic and will still primarily look the same as it does now, but you’ll notice some changes. Also, as I phase in the setup for the Inner Circle, you’ll probably notice it.

So, what is the Inner Circle all about? In short, it is going to be a level of enhanced access to me using this blog as the platform. I’ll go into more detail about it later, but Inner Circle members will have a much more over-the-shoulder, inside look into my business than my regular readers get. The focus will be on actionable advice, lots of videos, regular webinars, etc. Trust me, it’ll be cool and I’ll over-deliver as always. :)

The Rest

Now, to some other random things going on in my mind…

  • I’m really working to outsource more of what I do. Focus on the 20% of things which I’m good at and outsource the other 80%. A few days ago, for instance, I found myself doing some tasks that could easily be done by somebody else. So, what I did was took the time to write down the procedures and then sent those procedures to two people who will do them for me from here on out. The more things that are in my mind, the less focused I am.
  • I’m proud to report that I did NOT wait in any line for the Ipad. Not only that, I don’t plan to buy one. Yet. I’ve resigned to the fact that I’ll probably get one at some point, but I’m going to wait it out until I either see some really compelling reason to have one, or until they release the next version and fix all the shortcomings of the first one. So there. :)
  • I’ve been playing around with Foursquare. It is kinda cool, but I have yet to see the point of it for the normal user. For business, it makes sense. But, every time I “check in”, I know that it serves no purpose, yet I’m still compelled to do it. Explain that one! ;)

Have a great Friday, my friends.

Yeah, I gave you some hell on Facebook over that 4square…I don't get it either.

Outsourcing is something I've finally come to grips with…now the problem is that I have to work :)

Foursquare is one of those things that isn't very useful until it's *mass* adopted. Taking a look at it's function at SXSWi last month shows that it's not pointless at all – if used for effective purposes (finding out the “cool” events, what's going on around town, who's with who, etc.)

Sure, you can have a large group of active users within your own network… but if they're spread out all over the country, then what actionable measure would anyone care to take on the information they're being fed on your location. “So, David Risley is at the Steak-N-Shake in Tampa? Now what?”

Until that point, I can't see geo-location social networks being anything more than a fad. Unless it's integrated as a minor feature of a customer review site like Yelp.

The inner circle sounds interesting, David.

Looking forward to hearing more about it. Kind of like an open door into more of what you do and are about but not the entire way in kind of thing I expect?

I'm looking forward to reading more about your projects in the coming weeks. I'm also thinking a bit about whether I should buy an iPad or not.

Great update – it's some way of holding yourself accountable psychologically. For the level my blog is on right now, what I need is more traffic from search engines. I'm highly dissatisfied with the traffic from blog commenting and i want to up my guest posting.
