Do You Suffer From This Disease?

One of the most common traits of people who make little to no money online, almost across the board, is lack of action. It is a disease rampant among people who’d like to make some money with their blogs.

But, while it is a disease, the cure is so simplistic.

The Symptoms

You have an idea for a blog or something to offer online. You think it has a chance to make some decent money for you. You’re excited, but you’re not quite sure how to go about it.

So, you start reading blogs. You start learning. You might even buy an info product or two to learn the ropes.

But, is that enough? You don’t want to do it wrong. You fear failure. You’re afraid that moving forward and having it not work is far worse than having an unfulfilled idea. So, you keep on absorbing more information. You tell yourself that you’ll launch your idea “when the time is right”.

You fall into an endless cycle of self-questioning. You keep looking for some missing x-factor. You think everything needs to be perfect before you do anything. And all your launch ideas continue being postponed.

What happens? Exactly nothing. You remain in the ranks of the aspiring entrepreneurs. You read about those who have found success, but you continue to remain in the shadows.

[As an aside, can you tell I've been there before? ;) ]

The Cure

Is there a magic pill for this disease? No. But, there is a cure. In fact, you already have the cure in your possession. The problem is that you’re not permitting yourself to USE the cure.

The Cure is simple: STOP OVERTHINKING.

It is just a decision.

Nobody is keeping you from finding success online. There is no “right time” to start making money. There is no secret combination.

At the end of the day, it is a simple decision.

You either decide to continue doing nothing, or you say “Dammit, enough of this. I’m going to take action NOW.” And you know what? If you make that decision and follow through, you’re there! Because that’s really all it takes. A decision.

Fear of failure is a big reason people fall into this disease. But, really, what’s the worse that can happen? You launch your new product and nobody buys it? What’s going to happen to you if that happens? It isn’t as if you’re going to die or lose everything you have. So, what’s the big deal? If you launch a site or product and it doesn’t go the way you wanted, then you just look it over, learn from it, then have another go at it in a different way.

Having multiple failures is part of the road to success. When something you do doesn’t work out the first time, just grin and say “Well, I’m that much closer to really making it now!”. :)

Seriously.

So, stop overthinking things. Determine what it is you want to do. A new blog? A new product? Then, do it. Set a deadline. Get it done right away. Don’t say “I’ll launch my new blog this summer”. What?! It is a blog! You can have it up and running within a day – TOPS!

So, get to it.

I think I suffer from over-thinking at times. I can definitely see how too much thinking can sacrifice too much time, which is crucial to an online business. Decisions should be decisive (no pun intended).

I am a terrible procrastinator and I tend to over-think everything – both in my personal and private life. When thinking rationally I totally agree that it is much better to give something a go, even if it fails, than over-think and never try. However, when it comes to it I still struggle to get over that mental hurdle.

This post hit me to the nuts. I’ve been overthinking and questioning everything for years and not getting much done. The other problem is drifting away from what I was supposed to do and in the worst case, start something new even before the last one is finished and followed through.

There’s so much cool stuff to do and read that it’s hard to keep focus, but I’ve found that it helps to write the original “what I want” down and then asking myself: “will this help me towards what I want?”

For me it’s the site itself. Trying to get the design just perfect prior to launch has already stalled one blog for over a year, and a second for two years.

I think a major issue is the fact that people plan way to much and start to convince themselves that its not worth it or is too much effort.

Just jump in and go from there!

Great post I this is EXACTLY how I feel. Under the headline ‘The Symptoms,’ that is exactly how I feel. I’ve realized lately it’s all about making that decision and just doing it.

Work hard and if it doesn’t work, try it again.

Great post this motivates me even more.

    Thanks!

No most of the time I don’t suffer from this but I have been in the past. Being in the game for years now has taught me to “just do” and let the market give me feedback. It is impossible to guess the outcome anyway. And another fun thing is that once you think like this you can see that even the famous online marketers that make millions a year are doing the very same thing, making the very same mistakes and if that is not a comfort I don’t know what is :)

Yes I used to fear failure, but now I take action and the fear has gone. I put the work in and if it does not work I try again. But my motto is do not give up. Some give up at the first hurdle.
