Twitter Limits to 2000 Follows. Could They Charge To Lift The Limit?

In my last post, I stated in passing that Twitter had limited accounts to following 2,000 people unless you already had more than 2,000 people you follow. Apparently, I broke this news to some – unwittingly.

Interestingly, Twitter only sort of acknowledged this. It seems people are commenting on it on their own sites, as in here and here.

So, Twitter is limiting to 2,000. Facebook has long been limiting you to 5,000 friends. Is it right?

I can see why they do it. However, are they placing an artificial limit that might get in the way of real networking? On the Internet, it is not out of the question to wish to follow more than 2,000 people. True, Scoble-esque information junkies are used to subscribing to tons of people and blogs.

Hmmm…just a side thought…perhaps this could be something they lift for premium Twitterers…and charge something for it? The idea of premium Twitter accounts has been floated as a way for the company to make some money.

Hey, its just a live thought stream from a nerd. This is what goes through my head in after hours. :)

  1. I was limited from the number of people I am following two days ago and still cannot follow anyone new. I only follow 400 people have double that following me. Whats up with that?

  2. Headline is incorrect. They’re limiting the number of people you can follow, not the number of people who can follow you.

I don’t know, I haven’t been able to get past 1896 in followers.  I follow 1300… Never understood.  I add new followers daily, sometimes, 10-20…

  3. my question is, is there a limit on “following” ? i get about every tenth tweet of the people i follow. it is like they have put a governor on the car.

    do you know?

  4. Yeah, you’re correct. Looks like I typed something different than I intended.

  5. I was one of those afflicted with this imposed limit. I think Twitter has, by virtue of this imposition, created a “caste” system of sorts. It pretty much grinds my ability to network with new followers to a halt and is at odds with what true networking is all about.

However, it’s also free so Biz and Evan can do what they dang well please and there’s not a thing I can do about it except raise a ruckus, which I fully intend to do.

  7. I am also stuck at 2K follow limits, What’s the rule ? Can’t we follow more? Please Help!

  9. The question rather is would you pay to have this limit raised, or would you just create a new account? Unfortunately I got in at the last minute so I’m stuck at the 2,000 cap.

  11. Hmm – i’m not sure this is true though because I’ve seen tonnes of people with over 20,000 followers – am I just way behind on what’s been going on recently? :(

  13. Very well could be a way for them to generate money and who can blame them. There are a ton of people making money online from using their service so I think it is understandable for Twitter to make a buck as well.

  15. great psot..

I guess it is not that gould if they limit the number of people you can follow.

  17. I couldn’t find anywhere how many followers you need to have to follow more than 2000. The magic number is 1500. Once you pass it, you can follow more.

  18. Exphys2000 says:

how many followers would I need for the 2000 limit to be lifted? anyone?

  19. You don’t however have to have 2,000 followers; the magic number is in fact 1,819. Twitter lets you follow the number of followers that you have plus 10%. When you hit the figure of 1819 you are allowed to follow that number plus a further 182.
