What Would Happen To The World Without Your Blog?

This is a guest post by Jason Ulsrud, at Forty2Fifty.

I have found myself asking this question a lot lately. Am I providing purpose to the world?
Your blog can effect humanity in one of three ways:

  • Make the world better
  • Not change the world at all
  • Make the world worse

How your blog can make the world a better place

good_world Simply put, provide solutions. Every single person who comes to your blog is there for a reason, even your most avid readers, mom and dad. If you can provide even one person with a solution to their problem, then you’re making the world a better place. However, providing solutions without making money is not good business for a Problogger.

Capitalizing on the solutions you are providing to readers with products and services that will support your purpose or add to your readers lives can take you from hobby blogger to Problogger.

How your blog will not change the world

average_day Ineffective blogging will likely never change the world. I read a lot of blogs and come across several that are just ineffective. Everything from poor design and layout, making it harder for your readers to navigate, to bad customer service will kill the entire purpose of your blog.

Designing the blog for your readers and using every social networking platform available, such as Twitter and Facebook, to communicate with your readers will take your blog from blah to world changing.

How your blog can make the world worse

end_of_world I’m going to assume none of you fit into this category so I’ll speak freely here. If you’ve set up a blog as a personal platform to get attention or only make money from scammy products, then you’re making the world worse. You’re not providing any value to the blogoshpere or humanity.

Stop right now and find a career path where you can provide value to the world. It’s not all about money. I’m a firm believer if you offer real solutions and care about your readers the money will follow and you’ll have fun in the process.

So, What Would Happen To The World Without Your Blog?

Leave a comment and let me know, and what you can change to add even more value to your readers.

Google would have to find another source for a couple thousand searches a month.

But scammy product is in the eye of the beholder. Do you think people offering clean colon is scammy products? Do you think people offering a a collection of “do follow forums” and a video explaining how to set up a forum account for $49 is a scammy product? I don't think anybldy offers scammy product. Even people who are using scams are offering valuable products, for example, generic viagra.

Take for example the free credit reports. You can get those for free but people sell them for a few.

How about those teaser credit cards? How about those bundled CDSs that Wallstreet sold to the financially savvy investors?

Wealth is built upon taking money from more financially challenged people than you are and that is the truth.

I have to say they I am providing a service to people with the information that I write on my blog. But, if my blog was gone tomorrow would it really matter? I am not sure. After all there are so many websites that my readers would find some other place to get the information they are looking for.

However, since my blog is still here, I want to take advantage of the opportunity (not people) and provide the best service and information possible to try an make a difference in someone's life.

    Hey Jason and David,

Really interesting discussion – reminds me of one of the questions I ask myself every time I am about to publish a blog post – is this going to add more signal to the world out there, or is this just noise?

I try to constantly be providing useful, actionable information to my readers – and before I post, I will often search on Google first and write the post because there was some information I couldn't find in a single place, and so I build the resource.

If my blog was gone tomorrow, the world would still go on… I provide valuable services, but there would be someone there to step in my place and provide solutions for those customers in waiting…

I think that's the case for all businesses…

If my blog disappeared, then the sun would explode and the earth would get dragged into a blackhole, and everyone would be eaten by bees.

I definitely want to enrich the world with my blog. I want to illuminate the planet with my original existence and inspire those around me to do the same. Although I'm still in the beginning of the process, I have big plans for my blogging platform and I'm going to cause a creative ruckus before my light turns off for good.

I totally agree with what you said about blogs that are hard to use and navigate. A blog can have very useful content and a very inspiring message, but if these things are very difficult to find in your pages, many readers would sadly not be able to enjoy your blog and find the solution to their problems.

    hey David,
I also ask my this question. Even though my blog isn't unique, i strongly believe i offer good articles to my readers. I always think on improving daily and my blog has become a reference to many.

Since my blog is so new, not one person would notice if it were gone.

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

For now my presence isn't noticeable. But i'm working towards that by been more creative. Creativity is the key.

I like your idea here. I think we all have a chance to make a difference.

Please tell me what can a person really say with only 140 characters? Sure is a small
amount, not even a paragraph. It would be so nice if it was this big. Is that why have their
own hosted blogs? I know I have much to learn. Also thanks for the great books that I can
study and implement the info into my life.
