Why Do You Blog? [Reader Poll]

Simple question: Why do you blog?

To help people? To make money? Promote a business? For your own personal enjoyment? To vent?

What was it that originally inspired you to start blogging?

And, I have a followup…

IF making money from it is a goal of your’s, did that goal come later? Has that goal changed your original reason for getting into this?

I’d love to hear your answers. Please share them in the comments.

UPDATE: Yes, my own answer is forthcoming. :) You first. :)

Nice question. I started my main blog as a site for poetry and photography, then it developed into blogging tips and blog marketing. I now have a separate site for my photography that is purely personal for now, but my husband and I have great business ideas for it in the future.

Why do I blog? I do it to help people and because I enjoy it. After a year, I wanted to start earning some income off of it, and I see it as a well balanced effort – I still help people and still enjoy it, plus it turns a little profit.

I originally started blogging just to share the information I had around having a home based business and personal development. I saw it as a way to help others and to fulfill my desire for artful expression.

About 2 years later it turned into more of a, “hey I can get paid for helping others with this stuff.”

I like to say entrepreneurs get paid for solving problems that others are experiencing.

Why do I blog today? I blog to contribute to peoples awareness around themselves and their business. It supports my consulting business and my lifestyle. I enjoy helping my audience make sense of transitioning from the world of 9-5 world to supporting their own dream.

I was introduced to “multiply” a social network/blogging platform. I got hooked, for it gave me the power to post anything I want. Ramblings, videos, thoughts etc. That was I think 5+ years ago.

I then learned about stuffs like Internet marketing or “Internet Lifestyle” or other types of lifestyle stuff; That got me thinking that “hey, I may do those as well”.

Now, I just want to share what I learn everyday. Give opportunities to myself and to others. Blogging can be an instrument for that.

I blog about how to drive traffic to your website using social media, blogging, and video. Why? So I can drive traffic to OUR website from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and by commenting on blogs that are relevant to our audience.

    Tag, David — you’re it!! ;o)

    Great question!

I started blogging in 2009 because of a broken heart. I found blogging as an escape that couldn’t hurt me as I was already being hurt.

I didn’t know much about it and got very interested in blogging/Internet Marketing topics and so I started writing about what I learned and connecting with cool people.

I then learned it could bring in money though I didn’t have a clue as to how. I kept going and finally just wanted to find a way to help people while earning money through it. That’s what I’m working on now. It’s fun. It’s a joy and is exciting and something I can just share with people so I find it to be a really great way to connect with others and help share useful information.

Mostly, I write to learn. If I can’t write it down, I probably don’t know it very well. Blogging has a side benefit of demonstrating that expertise. If I can make money at it, so much the better. As it stands right now, my main blog is performing on the model I targeted. Iteration from here gets me better performance.

Because I can. The more complex answer is, to reinvent myself. All part of, The Experiment.

I blog to keep my interview and on-camera skills on point in case I return to my TV news career in the future.
But I’m happiest about the community of moms who follow and support each other on my blog.
Plus I found a way to get my blog sponsored every month.

I blog because I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. The pleasure and sense of accomplishment I feel when I hit publish is wonderful. I would like this to be my full time job.

To help people… Simple as that.

After 20 years in business, and building several successful companies, I feel I have a few things to say that can help a few people out.

  • http://www.fix-it-blog.com Monte

I started blogging to help people, my main web site is mainly beginner/novice do it yourself computer repair. A lot of info there but it doesn’t touch on the Advanced repairs that someone with a few years experience would want to know or would be looking for.

So I blog for the Advanced DIYer or the Pro Tech, sometimes some thing I have learned in the past, sometimes something that has just bit me.

When I started there was this guy in Fl that had just came home from a Cruz, said he paid for it with his blog. Imagine that, someone could pay for a Cruz with a blog.

Actually I follow Dave’s plan, the blog is part of my overall business strategy, one of five different income streams.

Have I made any money with it? A little, I don’t have adsense or any affiliate products, all the products on my blog are mine.

    Thanks Dave for sharing…

I blog to help people searching for advice on mental health and anger issues. I love helping people find reliable, research-based help, written in easy-to-understand language.

I have blog to rant , to try to make money, and most of all, to show I exist. The feel of someone else replying to your article, give yourself a feeling of being noticed or listening to. Same reason why I comment, to learn or give something of myself.

  • http://charlenebrownpainting.blogspot.com Travelpainting

I have an art blog on which I post a new picture about once a week — because it keeps me painting. I think you see a lot more, and get more out of life, if you’re always ‘looking for your next painting.’
I’ve been thinking for a couple of years that I might commercialize my blog (that’s why I read your stuff so avidly) but for now I just keep on painting. Maybe next year…

  • http://www.snohomishcountybloggirl.com Snohomish County Blog Girl

I created a blog because I saw a need in my community. I moved to Snohomish County, WA because of all the activities. It takes research to find the activities though. I decided to blog about all the cool places our county has to offer because I love to pass on great places to go. This year it is about restaurants, shops and activities. Next year, festivals, art shows, antique shows, etc. will be profiled. The blog forces me to get out of my comfort zone and continue exploring the area.

I would eventually like the blog to just pay for itself and build a fun little on-line community! :)

  • David Gillaspie

Hey David, I blog because no one was doing what seemed like a natural thing, making a difference in people deemed ‘throw away’ to the more able bodied among us, the infirm elderly. I blogged to get athletes involved in caregiving for their families instead of leaving it to the hand-holders.

Of course that all went off the tracks and now I blog with this in mind, The Dave Treatment, where I write takes on ‘throw away’ issues. Since we live in such a disposable world, it seems like a natural progression. And there’s no end to subjects since it’s all a matter of perspective.

Michelle got in a nice tag with ‘you’re it.’ That only happens between bloggers and playground recess, which was always fun.

    Dave

  • Jac

I started blogging mainly writing down stuff that I was thinking about and which I thought may help others. I never promoted it and from time to time I would think about the making money from it part… I just never did anything about that. So nobody came to the blog.

Now it crashed and I lost all or most of the content and I guess I’ll never know if I can help somebody if I don’t revive it. Since then I lost my job and cannot even buy a cup of coffee, that seems to be the standard measurement for how deep in trouble you are, so it would be nice if I can help somebody and make some money from it.

Point is… Yes I started it to help people but probably didn’t and yes I’ll try again and this time I’ll try and make some money. I guess I still want it to be for my personal enjoyment as well, otherwise… what’s the point?

  • http://www.simplefamilyleadership.com Marvin

I blog to express my passion for leadership and to justify all the money I’ve spent over the years on books/tapes etc.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Getoutofstuck Roberta Budvietas

Thanks David for asking a question that makes me re-examine my motives. I started to blog because I was told that it was a great way to gain awareness. For nearly a year my blog, Get out of stuck excel went nowhere. Gurus said that I was unfocused and talked about too many topics. Then I joined some groups and did some blog challenges and suddenly my blog was being read and people started to comment that I was thought provoking and helped them examine their life and business.
Sometimes my blog is a rant but usually it is the result of working with clients and their attitudes and stumbling blocks which arises from their beliefs, actions and attitudes.

  • http://smallbusinessbandits.com Linda Bliley

I started personal blogging on Blogger because my son is living 2,000 miles away, my sister is 1,100 miles away, and I wanted to keep in touch with them. I don’t like putting stuff up on Facebook. Too many old classmates.
After I was terminated from my employment, I started business blogging because I couldn’t face sitting in an office all day every day anymore after 20 years of it. I want to use my accounting and tax background to help small business owners understand they need to pay attention to who has access to their money. I am working on the structure information, like “The reason you need an accounting manual” and “Lack of cash controls in gentleman’s club = theft” while frequently posting a quick analysis of current embezzlement arrests. (That part’s easy because there are multiple arrests across the country daily. It’s always the “trusted” employee that does it because nobody’s looking at them, because they’re, well, trusted!)
When I get the structure done, and develop some written procedures for setting up more secure two-, three- and four-person offices, I will sell those on my website. I may do some consulting, because, as you have noted, David, it’s access people pay for. I’m not ready to join the Inner Circle yet, but when I feel like I’m ready to have someone look at my stuff, and start promoting and selling, I’ll be in touch.

    Hi David,

I blog because it is the easiest way to share information with a group of artisan businesses in my community. Although blogging is quite new for me – I love the format and the way in which I can organize information to make it easy for my readers to find.

As to your follow up question – if it’s not making money – I can’t afford to invest as much time in it. One must eat (and pay the bills) if one wants to continue this form of creative expression.

I blog for my extended family in part to keep a part of us together and off the edge of the cliff. When we look at the photos and read the stories and comments, we know we’re a part of something we can all related to (pun intended!). It also eases my guilt of moving 1200 miles away.

  • Getkidsoutside

“My-mother-told-me-to-pick-the-very-best-one-and-you-are-it. No tag backs.” The kids in the photo are huddled together to pick who’s it. I love it when kids figure things out without me. My passion for getting kids outside and facilitating unstructured play is a big reason why I started blogging. However, the main reason I blog is because I love to write. I get a lot of satisfaction out of writing and seeing articles published on the internet. I’d like to develop the blog into an income producer and start a separate blog focused on writing skills. Thanks for asking.

Originally David, I started blogging to promote a business I had, a contracting business. Later after I sold the business, I tried blogging to teach others what I had learned along the several years I had been doing it. I honestly had more fun before people knew who I was.

Now, I rarely blog (although I did post today) and spend more time on client work with email marketing, CSS, HTML, and niche building… along with a products site of my own it works out ok….

  • http://www.worldhealthhub.com Russ Marchewka

I started because I was tired of having 10-15 minute conversations about health and nutrition with multiple individuals each day. I love talking and teaching, but the blog is the easiest portal to reach the most people and also have time for myself.

It didn’t even occur to me that I could make money with my blog until I started researching how to reach more people with my message. Then that kind of opened up the possibilities that in addition to helping people, I could actually help myself by making what I love doing the job that pays me.

That’s where blogging got hard! Now I am opening up a e-store to sell the health products that I take myself and blog about. It seems as if I found the portal to make my passion into my job. Now I am chasing the dream temporarily so that hopefully I can live my dream later on.

    Why?

To improve the world! Seriously. Guy Kawasaki wrote in “The Art of the Start” that you should create a business that will positively improve the world in some way. In the realm of church audio, there are a lot of churches where the sound guys don’t have any type of audio training. I started my blog to teach the fundamentals of audio in an easy to understand way – make the technical appear less so. As a sound guy myself, I love help other sound guys!

What was it that originally inspired you to start blogging?

I wanted to share what I was learning.

If making money from it is a goal of your’s, did that goal come later? Has that goal changed your original reason for getting into this?

Not so much goal as a benefit. During the early days I tossed up adsense to get a few pennies when I could (hey, why not, everyone was doing it, right?) Then I went through a period of ZERO advertisements in any way. I wanted people to come for the content. Now I’m at the point where I’m still creating content but am seeing advanced needs and a way to fill those with products. But my goal still continues to be providing educational resources to church sound guys.

I blog because I love to write. I’d blog if no one read my posts (and I have before).

I also blog to share my ideas and gain some exposure for my businesses (each of which has been developed to help people). So, the more I blog and the more people that read, the more chances I get to help other people. This makes me happy.

So, in the end, I blog because it makes me happy. :)

I did not intend to start blogging, I intended to start an internet business. Blogging was introduced to me as an “authority” site. Of all the different kinds of sites, eCommerce, mini-site, membership site, etc., I came to believe that an authority site was best suited to me and my talents so I took my business in that direction. It has turned out to be a very slow and difficult way to make money. I enjoy it tremendously and do make a living now but it sure took a while. If I had to do it over again, I would not start out with a blog. I was one of those that fell into the trap of thinking the blog was the product. WRONG!!!!! I have consoled myself though that my ton of free info has indeed helped a lot of people. Some really dramatic stories like impoverished kids in gang areas resisting a life of crime because they learned how to make video by reading my blog. How much is that worth? To a sentimental gal like me who is not real materialistic it means a whole dang lot. My 23-year-old daughter on the other hand, who wants helping paying her sky high tuition, is not so touched. I have no regrets, but I would not advice others to take my exact path.

  • Brian

I started so people could hear about modern agriculture straight from the farmer’s mouth. Who better to inform people about food production than the producers?

I’m enjoying learning from others about my industry, and challenging questions are just another opportunity for me to learn.

  • http://treatmenttalk.org Cathy | Treatment Talk

I blog for two reasons. It is therapy for me to write about my situation. I also hope that my blog will help others. My blog is in the addiction niche, and the blog is for the most part from the perspective of the parent. I seem to have readers who have experienced addiction in many different ways, not just being a parent.

Making money is not necessarily a goal of mine, although I would love to have expenses paid for the blog, so I’m thinking about my options on that. I may put up some affiliate links in the future, or a donation link.

    Hi David,
On my passion blog “Goalsblogger” I blog to motivate myself first and help others second, I blog to experiment with the relatively new way to interact with others. It would be nice to make money from my passion blog, but since it’s passion based, I would do it anyway;)
On my affiliate blogs I blog mainly for money, but I have passion for experimenting with SEO, traffic, marketing etc, so it’s all good and fun.
    Fun question.

I started to blog to educate myself and others within the great Hotel Family.

It is truly unique how blogging has become one of the biggest learning portals for me. New doors has opened. And I have meet a lot of new great friends.

Beside the educational part and meeting new friends, I blog to engage, build trust, care and provide a proper response channel for my audience.

Plus since I am the author of my blog I can choose to bring my attitude, have as much fun as I want, enjoy every little bit of what I do and then give in abundance. And then I am open to receive. Is not that what blogging is all about?

    Cheers.. Are
