I have a Siteground account that uses a domain for a site that never went live.
I now want to use that domain name somewhere else.
Can I simply cancel my Siteground account (I’m going to use a different service provider) or do I need “disconnect” the domain first?
How soon would that domain be available for use?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just transfer the domain to another registrar and you can do whatever you like with it. Then, turn off the Siteground account.

Phil, I just went through the process (this example may not be your situation). My domain was with GoDaddy, it was NOT hosted with Siteground. I deleted the website in Siteground – I believe the DNS pointers (nameservers) revert back to GoDaddy after a bit of time. I switched to WPX hosting and then grabbed the DNS nameservers they gave me, hopped back in GoDaddy, and popped in the new nameservers.
FYI, the website I had on Siteground was nothing, so I had no second thoughts of deleting it. However, if you truly built a website you wanted to preserve, you would need to go through a few extra steps of migrating your site to another host.
Personally, I always recommend not having your domain and hosting in the same place. It allows for easier pivoting when you want to change hosts.

Yeah, I use Namecheap as my registrar and run DNS through Cloudflare. Works nicely. And independent from hosting.
