Would love your thoughts on Proton Mail vs FastMail vs ZohoMail

With a general movement away from Gmail over privacy concerns, I keep hearing Proton Mail popping up in discussions and to a lesser degree, ZohoMail. I know David uses FastMail. I would love to see a comprehensive review comparing these three as well as hearing people’s objective opinions, the good and the bad.

I use protonmail for a specific use case where I don’t want to have to worry (as much) about getting scammed or having my email hacked. I know that if I get an email to my normal email box about this particular topic/service, then I can ignore it, since they are all using my protonmail address where things are encrypted even on their servers.

I’ve still got a google apps for domains legacy app and it looks like I might get to keep that for my personal email; not sure if I will or not but once that started getting shut down at the start of the year I began investigating alternatives so for my new business we are now using the Rackspace email add-on through my CloudWays account.

Rackspace has been fine for the little we’ve used it so far (a couple of months at this point, low volume on the email.) It includes a calendar in the web interface, and we’re using the Spark email app to consolidate all of our various email accounts in one place and it integrates just fine with that. Reliability has been fine so far. Price is right. ($1/box/month)

I haven’t tried Fastmail or ZohoMail. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Zoho apps when we used them the last few years (mostly the help desk and failed to get the CRM to work with our systems.)

Thanks Blaine. Some useful insights there. I’ll probably move to Cloudways at some point so I’ll tuck this info away. I’ve never heard of Spark. I’ll check that out for sure.

You can find it here: https://sparkmailapp.com/
Has direct connections w/a bunch of services and works with any IMAP/SMTP capable service. Also has calendar functionality built in though that doesn’t integrate with as many.

One thing I really like about it is that you can add multiple accounts and then treat them as a single inbox in one view but still keep each one completely separate for where emails are stored and can look in just that inbox in another view. You can also quickly setup all your keyboard shortcuts to match a few different services (or go in and customize every one however you want.)

The pro version includes the ability to share inboxes with a team and to coordinate in email drafts but I’m just using the free version and haven’t tested that out yet.

I still use FastMail. Love it. It is like Spark, except web-based. It is a web app and not a traditional email client. But, it does pretty much anything, really.
