Going to the gym sucks, but…

Creating Habits For The Things You Want

I hate working out.

Like, I really just don’t like it. I want to be healthy and all that jazz, but I just don’t like to work out. Sitting there lifting heavy stuff just isn’t my idea of fun. Not unless there’s a bigger point to it, and just repetitive lifting feels sorta pointless.

But, in January, I started going to the gym anyway. A new gym opened up near my house and I said fuggit and started going. 🙂 Not because I like it, mind you. But because… I HAD TO.

So, for the last 3 weeks or so, I go to the gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And I’m happy to say I haven’t missed a beat yet.

At this stage, I just set the goal to do an earnest workout for no less than 30 minutes. Like, not sitting there drinking water and looking around, but actually doin’ stuff for a full half hour. The gym fanatics would probably laugh at my cute little half an hour and think I’m being a lightweight. And maybe I am. But, see, at this stage my goal is just…

… to form a pattern.

See, yeah, I’m working out. But, the bigger win for me right now is that I got up off my ass and held to my commitment to be there at all. If I show up at the gym, I won. Do my little half an hour and then get the hell out of there.

The idea is to simply create a habit. It is like brushing my teeth… or having dinner. Those things are so much a part of my daily schedule that it never occurs to me not to do it. I am working to get the gym to that level.

On a related note…

This very newsletter is now at issue #250. It is kinda hard to believe I’ve written 250 of these things. 🙂

For a few years before I started this, I noodled the idea of emailing my list more frequently. I thought about doing something daily. But, the idea that came up was always…

Can I do it? What will I say?

But, then at the time, I watched a few other entrepreneurs I know start leaning in on doing more frequent emails. So, like the gym… I said fuggit and started this thing. And here we are 250 issues later. It started out every weekday and then I did dial it back to 3 times per week. But, I do it.

It’s funny, but in my line of work, I get a fair amount of people who have those same concerns about content creation.

Can I do it? What will I say?

You know what helps get you over that? Just saying fuggit and start. 🙂

Create the habit by just putting one foot in front of the other… and start. Nobody said it had to be the best thing ever done right out the gate. But, the only way you’ll ever get totally comfortable with content creation and have it never be difficult for you… is to sit down and do it. Just start. Make a commitment and do it.

Set that goal and make your goal to just show up. You’re creating that habit.

And in terms of content creation and you getting better at serving your market as a content creator, there is simply no better way than to do it and do it often. Practice makes perfect, as they say.

Today, content creation is freakin’ child’s play to me. Because I just do it alot.

Now, my goal is to make working out feel the same way. 🙂 Super buff Dave. 😉 Hell yah.
