Issue #40

Keeping your business small on purpose?

Today, I wanted to talk about your business and your life. Specifically, what you want out of it.

What got me thinking about this was a thought I have had about my own business: Was I purposely keeping my business smaller for the purposes of lifestyle design?

I have said no to numerous little opportunities that could have been cool. Speaking opportunities. Partnerships. Even the chance to run one of the major conferences in my industry at the time.

(Side story: I was once offered the conference director position for New Media Expo, formerly Blogworld. Would have been an interesting thing, but I ended up turning it down because it looked too much like employment. Plus, as that turned out, it was a good move since the founder kinda went off the deep end and the conference imploded. But, anyway…)

But, when those things happened, I had to ask myself…

Was I saying no out of fear? Out of a lack of desire to confront something new?

Well, honestly… there might have been a little bit of that in a few cases. But, for the most part it is because I like to keep my business simple.

I like simple.

Because, in the end, my business is there to empower the life that I want, not to BECOME my life for the purposes of bragging rights.

I have no desire to be out there bragging about an 8-figure business. Heck, BMA isn’t even a 7-figure business.

And I’m fine with that.

If you don’t know this about me yet, I’d rather be out camping in my RV anyway. 🙂

With a bigger business comes complexity. Or at least a major uphill climb to try to systematize things to operate fairly hands off at that level.

So, sometimes, bigger isn’t always better with our online businesses.

Sometimes, it is best to start with the question of What Do You Really Want?

Then, work it backwards.

What do you want to have? What do you have to do to get it? Then, what do you have to BE?

Me? I freakin’ love teaching. I love communication of thoughts and ideas on things I think will help them.

I also love time flexibility, location independence…. and RV camping. A lot of RV camping. 🙂

I build the kind of business that lets me do all that.

How bout you?

What do you want? What do you want out of your business?

Sometimes…. no, all the time… you’ve got to determine what you REALLY want and then design the kind of business that makes that happen.

If you want braggin’ rights and a key to the country club, have at it. If you wanna be out there taking pictures of your Tesla like John Chow, have at it, man! Me? I’m perfectly happy to drive a Honda CR-V that I can flat-tow behind my big ass motorhome. He can keep his Tesla. I can’t flat-tow it. 😉

See ya tomorrow. 🙂
