The Wordpress-based membership site is, in my opinion, the most powerful and flexible platform on which to build and run your online business. But…

Many people don’t know how to set it up. They get confused by it. And there are so many options available that it is hard to know which way to go.

It can be so overwhelming that some even end up moving into hosted, proprietary software solutions – often with high monthly fees. These “all in one” solutions have their conveniences, but can also lack flexibility down the road and lock you into their monthly or annual fees.

Wordpress is open source and is the most used content management system on the internet. It has a VAST array of options for themes and plug-ins and you can make it do anything you want. You have full control over the data, your hosting – everything. For this reason, it is definitely the best way to go.

I’m compiled this tried and true package to simplify the initial setup.

This package was compiled to suit the needs of most new membership site owners. It will enable you to have an effective content marketing strategy, build your email list, sell courses and/or services, and all the basics.

Just Making It Simple For You

The idea behind this package is… simplicity. 

When building this on your own, you have to do all the research to select software (after even finding out what you need and what you don’t). You have to figure out how to set it up. You have to think about hosting. It can be a lot of different things to research and buy and it can feel like the costs keep stacking up.

Then, you’ve got the actual setup of those tools. How do you set up to actually take orders? How do set up what happens after they purchase? What about the emails that go out afterward? The sales pages, blog, opt-in forms, etc?

This package is all about doing all that for you. I will also be there as your advisor and coach on choices to be made to make the site work the best for you and your goals.

The Nitty Gritty

The idea here is to set you up with a site that can grow with you as well as keep your future costs down. And while I will help you get it all up and running, I don’t want you to feel as if you’re stuck with me. Everything is based on Wordpress and “out of the box” software. Not only that, you’ll be able to modify things yourself without knowing any code at all.

To do this, we will be using the Thrive Suite of tools. Feel free to research this yourself to see everything that’s included. Your site will be based on Thrive Theme Builder, using the Architect page builder. For any online courses, we’ll use Thrive Apprentice. I will do all the setup and the customization of your theme, course environment and more. But, using the visual builders, you will be fully empowered to make adjustments as you see fit on your own.

For ecommerce needs, we’ll set up Woocommerce. It works great with Thrive Apprentice. And if you need recurring billing, no problem. I’ll get you all set up. No need to figure out the technical stuff on your own.

For your email list, we’ll use FluentCRM. It is an awesome Wordpress-based marketing automation CRM. You won’t need to take on a monthly bill for a third-party email host. Just a small little bill for actually sending the emails (but I recommend Amazon and they’re so cheap it is crazy). I will also help you get set up with the basic automations needed (including welcome sequence, thank-you emails, etc.)

You will not need to purchase these packages separately as an added cost. It is all included in this packaged service.

I’ll even host your site for you for a year. You’ll be hosted on Cloudways, but I’ll take care of the bill. You’ll be able to access your site directly, but I will also be on there as a team member so I can help you through any confusions or issues as regards hosting. After a year, you can either decide to renew our relationship for continued management, move the site to your own Cloudways account, or migrate to another host of your choosing. Oh, and I’ll do the migration for you if you decide to move.

All you’ll need to do is bring the content. I’ll set you up with some placeholder copy for outgoing emails, but it is recommended you change it to fit your own voice. 

Questions You Might Have (And My Answers)

I can’t call them “frequently asked questions” yet because… well, this is a new package. 🙂 So, here we go…

This service is meant for people who want a professional, operational site that looks good, can build an email list, make sales, and have online courses. It is especially geared toward people who want that, but don’t have the technical knowledge with Wordpress to get it done. You don’t have the time not inclination to research a bunch of software options, deal with the learning curve, etc. You just want to get it up there and operational as quickly as possible and be reasonably “future proof”.

This is not really meant for super advanced membership sites with community functionality or other specific needs.

For one upfront package cost, I will take on the heavy lifting of getting your platform built. I’ll setup and install the software, get it all working, get the basic look and feel of the site up to how you want it, get the mechanics set up, and (optionally) host it for a year. We will also kick things off with a strategy call so we can work out the details of what you need before building anything.

I also know that, at times, people don’t even know enough to know what they need. And as you know, I’m way more than just a web dude. So, I will also be your advisor and coach through this process. When we speak, I will learn more about your intentions and I’ll guide you through the process.

Basically, the platform will be ready for you. All you’ve got to do is bring the content and your personal touch. I’ll take care of the mechanics and help get you over the sticking points.

Yes, but within reason. When we do our planning session, I will learn more about your needs and wants. And I will be putting the site together using Thrive Theme Builder. We will start with a fully operational and professional look and feel and I will customize it as needed to suit your brand and personal taste.

Keep in mind that I am not a pro graphics designer. I will not design your logo for you, nor create a fully custom design. For that kind of thing, you need a graphical/web design pro. But, I can get you to a good starting point. And, being based on a visual builder, you will be able to make modifications at any time.

We’ll figure that out during out planning session. I have other licenses to tools you may need, such as SEO plug-ins, performance optimization, etc. I’ll help you take care of all that. We will use my agency licenses for any plug-ins used as part of my service to you. Anything else you may want, you can buy that and I’ll help you install it and set it up. It is your site and you’re in the driver seat.

You will need to sign up for an external email SMTP service for your emails. I recommend Amazon SES as you can send a LOT of emails very cheaply. We’re talking, perhaps, a full 100K emails for only $10. Chances are,  you’ll be sending a lot less than 100K emails, so your actual monthly bill to Amazon will be quite small. I’ll guide you through setup, no worries.

If you want to install any other software plug-ins unique to your business, you may need to purchase your own licenses for those. Also, if you choose to use other web hosting, you’ll need to pay for that.

You will be responsible for your own domain.

If you would like me to remove the hassle of hosting for you, I can. I will manage your site on Cloudways and I will take care of it for a year. After that, you’ll have a few options. We can keep the site right where it is and you’ll just pay Blog Marketing Academy for monthly management. That’s totally optional. You can also just take over the Cloudways account and we’ll move the site to your account and you just pay for it. Lastly, if you don’t want to use Cloudways, you can choose to use any host you want and I will migrate your site over there for you. Hosting is included in this service as a convenience only if you need it. I’m happy to do it.

As for any plug-ins I install as part of providing this service, we will be using my client/agency licenses. I incur those expenses so you don’t have to. You will be able to update things and we’ll keep things maintained.

No. It is up to you to bring the business, the offers, and the content. It will be up to you to generate traffic. Obviously, as part of the Blog Marketing Academy, I do help people with initial strategy. But, this package is not about a “business in a box” where you just step into a money-making business. That’s the kind of thing bullshit artists promise in order to have you part ways with your money. What I am providing here is the PLATFORM from which you can build and grow your business.

Honestly, we’ll see. The first thing you will do is schedule a strategy session with me. Once we talk, I’ll have a better feel for things. Initial setup of the site is usually pretty fast. For the things I need you to do, I will provide checklists and guidance. I try to systematize this as much as possible for both your sake and mine.

My goal is never to lock you in with me as a service provider. In my ideal world, I’d get you up and running and you’d take over and be able to modify and run your site totally independently. So, with that in mind, I will be providing some training inside the membership for you to help with the included software. I will also be available to hop onto a call with you to show you around or to provide any “over the shoulder” videos to show you how to do things. Keep in mind, too, that all the software we’ll use is publicly available and very well-supported, so there is also a TON of documentation and content online on how to use it.

This package is based on the the needs of the majority of people starting up a membership site and building their platform. I do realize that you may have other things you want and that it is possible you’ll need some extra work done that is not typically part of this. That’s OK. All package clients have access to the members-only discount on service credits, so you can always purchase additional credits for other non-standard work. Also, we’ll talk about it in advance, so you’ll always be in the know and in control.

The first thing we will do together is a consultation via Zoom. If, for some reason, during or right after that call we decide we’re not a good fit or that what you have in mind isn’t something I’m going to do, I will refund your money minus the cost of our call ($98). Once work begins and I build your site for you, there are no refunds.

Here’s the thing… I don’t think it will come to this. Every client I work with does so because they like having somebody they trust to help them personally. And I like to think I’m a cool dude to work with. 🙂
