For this blog post, I’m going to introduce you to Frank Angelone, creator of the STZ Podcast. Frank has done a great job of raising his status in his niche through his podcast – and I think he has some great real-world, practical advice on how to use a podcast to grow your presence online.

Simply put, growing a blog these days is pretty damn difficult unless you embrace other mediums and effectively cross-promote your blog. So, I think Frank’s advice is pretty important – and some of it is pretty “out of the box” thinking, which I appreciate. 🙂

I’m also inviting Frank to present further on this topic to all Academy readers in a live webinar this coming Wednesday. You can RSVP here, and learn more below as well.

But for now, here’s Frank…

The Internet is full of useless tips.  I mean it.  How many times can someone tell you to grow your presence online by interacting more on social media?

I personally agree that this is a good first step, but it shouldn’t be the end all – be all approach. For me, with the STZ Podcast, I have a different outlook on how to do this and it all starts with listening to podcasts by other people.

Most people who are looking to share their insight with others feel that it will fall on deaf ears because nobody is listening.  Would they be wrong to feel this way? No.

However, you need to stop waiting for those people to come to you for your advice and go out and bring them to you.  Sound confusing?  I’ll explain.

Blogging Wasn’t Working Anymore…

I started podcasting because I realized blogging essentially wasn’t doing me any good.  Guest posting is a good starting point and all, but with so many people doing it now, it’s not the best strategy to embark on.

Instead, I decided it would be a smart idea to stumble upon new unique ways to get people to consume what I share by going after them.

The reason why I’m starting to share my insight on my podcasting techniques more and more with well known media outlets like Lockergnome, ProBlogger, and Virtual Newsmakers Show, and now here for the Blog Marketing Academy readers is because I’m sick of people charging others for information that really doesn’t teach anything new.  I figured why not give away what I know for free and give you actionable perspectives?

If you’re new to podcasting or already have a podcast, my suggestion is you start listening to popular podcasts in your niche.  Search around and look for one’s that take audience questions.  Why?

More often than not, well known podcasts take audience questions and that’s your opportunity to connect with those listeners and bring them to your business.

What?!  How is this possible?

It is simple.

Any podcast that has the ability to do “ask the audience” segments means they have an active community.  That’s good for you.  I’ve listened to podcasts like Podcast Answer Man and The Smart Passive Income Podcast waiting for Cliff Ravenscraft or Pat Flynn to get to the Q&A section because I know they’re going to say the name of the person who has the question as well as their website.  This is the most important information you should be looking for.

First of all, the reason any popular podcast is going to share the name of their audience member as well as their website is for the simple fact that they asked a question that can help the entire audience and because they want to give credit to that person.

At this point, I jot down who the person is, their website, and head over to their website.  If they have a contact form, I’ll send them an email letting them know who I am, where I heard their question, and simply help them.  The whole purpose is to give them the best answer possible and share your  knowledge on the topic.  Don’t just contact someone if you really can’t help them because you’ll lose your credibility at that point.

It’s important not to spam them either.  Don’t tell them you heard them on “such and such podcast” and ask them to check out yours.  Exchange a few emails with them and see how you can help them improve their goals.  Once you get an email from that listener thanking you for your help…at that point you can let them know about your podcast and simply ask for their feedback on it and how you can improve it overall.

Also, don’t ask them to subscribe.  If it’s good, they will without you having to ask.  Plus, the fact that you took the time to reach out to them and answer their question from another show is going to make them feel important because you were actually listening.

Listening is what people forget to do and this in my opinion is essential for growing your presence for whatever business you’re in.

Does this sound like a good tip to grow your business when it comes to podcasting? Would you like me to go into more detail on this tip and additional tips along these lines to use podcasting for your business?
