Do You Need To Run A WordPress Security, Malware, Or Spam Plugin?

Over the years, and while helping people out on their websites, I’ve seen a lot of people running various security plug-ins on WordPress. And unfortunately, I have often seen them cause way more problems than they solve. So, this begs the question: Do we need to run security plugins on our WordPress site?
